As we all adjust to a new lifestyle that may include social distancing, a great way to get out into the world in a safe and responsible way is with a family boat.
It’s hard to believe that we are in the middle of August. Thankfully there are some great weeks of summer left!
You may be a year-round resident or a second-home resident. This may be a vacation or a long weekend. No matter, we welcome you and are excited that you have found our pages.
Recently, we published the results of our second annual Best of the Lakes Region presented by the Bank of New Hampshire contest. The spring and summer have been some of the most challenging of our existence. Like you, we have braced ourselves for ongoing changes and are working to continue delivering news and information as it breaks.
Engagement with Best of the Lakes Region went beyond our expectations. We saw 26% more votes than last year and an increase in unique voters. Over 26,000 unique voters cast over 145,000 votes. No other contest draws as much positive attention to local businesses.
We started accepting nominations prior to this year’s pandemic. As the business community prepared to reopen for the summer season, we held voting May 26 through June 11. We waited to reveal results, allowing businesses to reopen and work towards normal.
This year we expanded the Marine section to support and honor the hard-working owners and operators of this important category. We also added additional categories to showcase all that is the Best of the Lakes Region. To be one of the 304 companies that finished in the top two spots of the 207 categories is an accomplishment.
This spring, we launched the Laconia Daily Sun Directory. More than just a digital directory, the site combines Best Of winners with year-round ratings and reviews. You’ll find deals, specials, calendar of events, and more. Be sure to bookmark it so you can visit often.
We encourage you to pick a copy of the winners' magazine. Then we challenge you to explore our winners, engage with them and support the Lakes
Region economy, while staying safe. Thank you to all who took the time to cast votes for your favorites. A big thank you to the many businesses that participated in promoting voting for the contest and through advertising.
For the next four weekends, we are going to focus on what makes our region best, including the unique places to visit, ideas for a long weekend, and in this issue, a focus on Marine services.
You will also find a guide to buying a boat, cooking on a boat, and living here (year-long, or as a second or third home).
We are honored to represent all that is the Best of the Lakes Region.

Having a primary home, or a second or third can make summer or long weekends best. In Laconia, you can still have waterfront lake living for well under a million dollars.
Whether you’re heading out for an afternoon cocktail party or a two- week offshore voyage, it’s important to think through and write down your meal plan ahead of time.
Lake Winnipesaukee can deceive you at times. For a body of water billed as New Hampshire’s largest lake — and a glance at the map will confirm that it is, no doubt — the lake can feel much smaller than those maps suggest.
